A Chat With Book Reviewer - Danielle from Mercurial Musings
Danielle writes the best reviews. I always love how thorough she is and how often she captures the heart of a story. It is my total pleasure to have her visit YAlicious today.

When did you first discover
your love for reading?
Welcome along, Danielle :)
I’ve loved to
read for as long as I can remember. While I wasn’t allowed to watch much TV
growing up, my parents let me read whatever I wanted to. Before entering middle
school, I’d gone through most of Dickens’ works and was getting started on
Stephen King. My mom quickly learned early that sending me to my room as a
punishment didn’t really work because I would curl up with a book, perfectly
content.

What were your favourite types
of books as a kid?
I’ve always been
an omnivore when it comes to books. One minute I’m reading the classics, the
next it’s whatever popular book I find on the shelf of an airport bookshop. I
do remember loving Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes as a girl, that’s the
puzzle-solver in me. Stephen King and H. P. Lovecraft were also favorites,
especially to read by flashlight under the covers!

How do you like to feel when
you finish a book?
Satisfied. I
hate an implausible happy ending. I hate endings that are more the author
deciding he/she did not want to write any more than a carefully crafted
cliffhanger. The ending needs to make sense in relation to the rest of the
book. I love turning the last page and musing for a bit about how that book
changed me or how the characters will continue to pull at my brain for a few
days after.

What do you like most about
reviewing books for authors?
Being able to
communicate with authors is a great perk. Before I started blogging, I didn’t
really know how to contact the writers I admired. Now, with a quick tweet or
email I can thank an author for letting we the readers into the world they
created. Sometimes, an author will reply back, and that’s just a bonus. In a few
cases, some of the authors whose books I’ve loved have become friends.

What's the most recent book
you've read that you thought would make an awesome movie?
I just finished
reading Juvie by Steve Watkins, it
played out in my head as a movie the entire time I was reading. It’s written
very succinctly in chapters that move between past and present, giving readers
bits of the story at a time. This style lends itself perfectly to the screen.

A
traditionally published author you love:
Libba Bray. Her writing is brilliant—she
paints with words so beautifully; I love being lost in her books. But the most
amazing thing is how she moves effortlessly between genres. Historical fiction
with a supernatural twist, yep, she’s done that. Snarky satire full of smart
humor, she’s done that too. I’ve come to believe there’s nothing she can’t do.
If you’ve not read any of her books, do so immediately—I’d start with The Diviners.
An
indie author you love:
Of course, I love your books, Melissa :) But I also adore Megan Curd’s books. Her imagination is limitless
and her drive to make her writing the best it can be is inspirational. She has
a new book coming out this month, Steel
Lily, everyone should check it out!
One
of your favourite YA books:
So difficult to pick one and if you ask me
again tomorrow, I’m sure I’ll change my mind. Shine by Lauren Myracle moved me in a way few books have, it’s edgy
and real and creeps into your subconscious.
One
of your favourite Adult books:
Again, choosing one is tough. I’m going to
pick Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer.
Krakauer is one of my favorite non-fiction writers. His style is journalistic
with a narrative twist. The story of Chris McCandless is one of tragedy and
unfortunate circumstance and reminds us all of the fragility of life.
A
book you've read more than once and the reason why:
Alice
in Wonderland. We moved a lot when I was growing
up, pretty normal for a military family—we shipped off from country to country
and I always felt a bit like Alice, falling down the rabbit hole and not really
knowing where I’d land. Alice is a book I re-read every year, I have since I
was maybe nine or ten. I also collect copies and would love to one day get my
hands on a first-edition!
That is so cool, Danielle. Alice in Wonderland is a true classic. I love how many different genres you enjoy. Thanks again for sharing with us.

A Chat With Book Reviewer - Sharon from Obsession With Books
This lady is one of my favourite reviewers. She writes such great reviews and I love the things she points out in a story.
It is my total pleasure to have her on YAlicious today :)
When did you first discover your love for reading? I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love and enjoy reading; I was a very
nerdy child (nothing’s changed) and always had a book in my hand – my mother is
constantly telling me I drove her crazy because I was off in fairy land with my
books and she couldn’t get me to do anything or go anywhere.
Where's your favourite place to read? I can read
anywhere and everywhere J we have a few beautiful parks near my home which are so peaceful so on a
quiet day I will take my book there to read otherwise I am snuggled up on our
comfy lounge, at the moment it so cold so it’s with the heat going &
usually a hot drink in hand.

What is your favourite genre now and why do you like? I enjoy a variety of genres and tend to change depending on my mood, at
the moment it is Young Adult to include Paranormal, UF, Fantasy, Contemporary, Dystopian
and Sci-fi – all must have romance though.
How do you like to feel when you finish a book? It depends on the book, if it evokes a lot of emotion it tends to stay
with me for a long while after but I always like to feel a sense of fulfillment
and happiness whether it was from the characters getting a HEA or an issue
being resolved. I’m not a big fan of books that make me feel down, confused or
angered, I love a happy, euphoric and content feeling.
What do you like most about reviewing books for authors? Promoting a book I have read and loved by sharing my thoughts and
encouraging others to hopefully pick it up and enjoy it as much as I have.
Where's your favourite place to read? I can read

Author Highlight - T. G. Ayer
It is very cool to have T. G. Ayer visiting my blog today. She is an amazing writer and has become a close friend. Her latest book Skin Deep is now out. I'm halfway through reading it. She has created a fascinating world and I can't wait to see how the book ends. Keep an eye out for my review post next week :)

1. What inspired Skin Deep?
But for today, as part of her Skin Deep Blog Tour, here is Tee's interview on Skin Deep and writing.
I'm a fan of paranormal and fantasy. the idea of shifters and magic has always enthralled me. Kailin's story came about when I read a scene in a novel where a killer removes the skin of his victim- that inspired the skinned Walkers body being found by the main character- everything just flowed from there. And this book was not plotted - totally on hundred percent pantsed.
2. Who is your favorite character in Skin Deep and why do you like them so much?
Tara the metal-singer -besides Kailin of course - I love Tara's power, would love to be able to mold any metal to whatever shape I like - and of course, Tara will have her own DarkWorld tale in time
3. If Kailin and Bryn (from your Valkyrie novels) met each other, how do you think they'd get along?
I think they would. Kailin's a bit of a mommy and in many way's so if Bryn. Both are strong and like to be treated with respect. Of course, Kai won't trust Bryn entirely becuase even if she's a Valkyrie she was raised a Human and Shifters don't trust many Humans.
4. I know you are passionate about your craft. What is your favourite part of the process?
I love writing but I also love the part where the ideas begin to fall into place. Where as soon as you ask yourself a question about the MS a whole bunch of ideas and solutions fall into place like pieces of a gigantic puzzle. Love it.
5. Do you listen to music when you write?
I do listen to music but I tend to prefer quiet during the day. Most of my wriitng is done listening to the three Cold Play albums I have running on repeat- for some reason their music helps me shut everything else in my mind down and allows me to concentrate.
Five Favourites
1. Author - Dean Koontz - cos to this day he still manages to hold my attention and give me the chills
2. TV Show - Revenge - isn't it fun to live vicariously through someone avenging herself against the people who have wronged her.
3. Movie genre - Anything thats fantasy - I love M. Night Shymalan's movies - a little horror a little fantasy- perfect
4. Actor - Gerard Butler - need I say more?
5. Place to read - by the fire, under a blanket sipping hot chocolate - and since I have no fire sitting in the sunshine will have to do. - oh and lots of rain will make it totally perfect
