Friday Favourites - Characters You've Created

This one is for all the writers out there, whether you're published or not. Actually - it really is for anyone with a good imagination :)

One of the coolest things about writing is getting to create these people and bring them to life on the page. I was asked at one of my school visits last week how close I got to my characters. Was I sad when the book finished because it was like saying goodbye to a friend?

The answer was a very quick, YES!

Although imaginary, these characters become real people. We get to know them so well. You think for them, move for them, react for them... in some ways you leave a small piece of yourself inside each one of them.

So - my question for you today is: who is the best character you've created? Why do you like them so much?

For me - the first one that pops to mind is Gabe Hunter from the Time Spirit Trilogy. I love him so much. He is like the ultimate father figure. He's cool, he's relaxed, yet strong and decisive when he needs to be. I can picture him so clearly in my head - the way he moves, the sound of his laughter - he just... rocks!

Another character I really love is Mica Latham from Forbidden Territory. I find her really funny. She's say things and does things that I would never dream of. I think that's why I like her so much - she is the me I was never brave enough to be at high school.

Now it's your turn - who do you love?

  1. There are so many characters that I love! Melanie is one of my favs (the MC in the novel I am currently revising), and a character called Landish in a fantasy novel I wrote a few years back. Oh he cracked me up. I really like Garrett from my last novel... okay, so I love most of my characters! lol I could keep going on and on.

  2. I have so many favorites, but my first YA favorite is Jason, from a WIP I've temporarily shelved but will probably get into revisions soon.

He comes from an abusive father and neglectful mother, and likes to party and mess around with girls. But when given the chance to spend the summer with his best friend's family, he sees a different way, learns to control himself and falls for a girl who he never expected.

  3. There are probably a few too many for me to name.
But to start with, I really love Ruby from The Mediterranean Source, because she's such a hard ass - but yet she is a softy deep down as well. I love Summer - from my Talent Trilogy - yet another hard ass... She has an attitude problem - one that I like. Like JC said - too many - and I could definitely carry on.
That's the problem with finishing off books - we develop such a unique relationship with these characters that you miss them long after the book is finished.

    1. I agree. They become like real people that will stay with you forever. I liked Ruby too - I thought she was awesome. Can't wait to meet Summer :)
